Another war may soon be brewing within our own borders.
According to a spokesman for the New York City Comptroller John Liu, the controversial mosque that is at the center of a heated nationwide debate due to it’s proximity to ‘Ground Zero’ may qualify for a public subsidy of tax-free financing for the project. Mr. Liu indicated that he has no problems approving the request if the mosque can prove it will be financially able to comply with all terms.
Scott Sieber, spokesman for the comptroller, had this to say:
“If it turns out to be financially feasible and if they can demonstrate an ability to pay off the bonds and comply with the laws concerning tax-exempt financing, we’d certainly consider it.”
According to the New York Times, the supporters for the ground zero mosque hope to raise roughly $70 million in tax-exempt financing to construct the center.
Should the comptroller’s office allow this to happen, as it seems they may be just “doing their job,” or should extra care and concern for the center and it’s location near ground zero be taken into consideration before such a project is approved?
